Choose Your Cam
The right cam depends on your goals, your existing valvetrain, and your vehicle's gearing and converter. This is a starting point — final spring, pushrod, and tuning requirements depend on your exact combination.
Truck Norris

Chopacabra
A named TSP camshaft offered across multiple platforms in this guide.
Stage 1
A mild, factory-spring-compatible step up — the entry point before Stage 2/Stage 3 territory. No dedicated tune page yet; browse all tune files below.
Stage 2
A larger truck-cam option available on the 99–06 and 07–13 platforms.
Stage 3
A larger-still performance cam option for builds ready for a matched valvetrain.
LV3 (4.3L V6)
GM's LV3 4.3L V6 is a separate engine family from the Gen III/IV/V V8s covered on this page. Cam tune files are available — browse tune files for details.
Your Cam Kit Still Needs The Right Tune
Cam swaps require calibration changes. DOD/AFM/VVT changes must match the mechanical setup, not just the cam. Downloadable compare files are for HP Tuners users who want to do the flash themselves; custom remote tuning is available if you want Jason to build the calibration for your exact combination.

Cam Kit Questions
What is included in a cam kit?
It depends on the kit and platform. At minimum, a complete kit includes the camshaft and the hardware needed to install it correctly — retainer plate/bolts, timing cover gasket, front crank seal, balancer bolt, and gaskets/seals. DOD/AFM-delete kits (Gen IV and Gen V) also include a full set of non-DOD lifters and trays, the correct valley cover or block-off hardware, head gaskets, and head bolts. See each kit's product listing and the platform parts guides above for exact contents.
Do I need lifters with a cam swap?
Only on the 1999–2006 Gen III platform can a cam-only swap be possible, and only when the existing lifters are healthy and the cam is designed for factory springs. On Gen IV (2007–2013) and Gen V (2014–2018), lifter replacement is always part of the complete kit — there is no cam-only option on those generations.
Do I need a DOD/AFM delete kit?
If your Gen IV or Gen V engine has factory DOD or AFM cylinder deactivation and you're changing the camshaft, yes — the complete delete kit (lifters, trays, valley cover/block-off hardware, gaskets, and calibration) is required, not optional. Gen III engines never had DOD/AFM hardware, so there is nothing to delete on that platform.
Can I reuse my factory pushrods?
Only if your new cam is designed for factory-length pushrods and springs (an NSR-style cam on a supported platform). Cams that move outside factory-spring-safe territory require matched chromoly pushrods at the correct length — see the platform parts guides above.
Do I need valve springs?
It depends on the cam. NSR-style cams on supported platforms are designed to work with factory springs. Larger, non-NSR cams require a matched valve spring upgrade.
Do I need a tune after installing a cam?
Yes. Any cam change, DOD/AFM delete, or VVT change requires the calibration to be updated to match the new hardware. See Build Your Tune or browse downloadable DOD/AFM delete tune files.
What is the difference between Gen III, Gen IV and Gen V kits?
Gen III (1999–2006) never had factory DOD/AFM hardware, so a cam-only swap can be possible. Gen IV (2007–2013) has DOD/AFM and always requires the complete delete kit, including a non-VVT front timing cover conversion on this guide's documented strategy. Gen V (2014–2018) uses AFM, a different valley cover/VLOM design, a mandatory VVT phaser lockout, and direct-injection-specific tuning — its parts are not interchangeable with Gen III or Gen IV.
Can I install a Gen IV kit on a Gen V engine?
No. The non-DOD lifter trays, DOD/AFM block-off hardware, and non-VVT front timing cover used on Gen IV are Gen IV-specific and do not fit Gen V's different lifter, valley-cover, and VVT-lockout design. Order the kit built for your exact generation.
What parts are usually forgotten?
The one-time-use balancer bolt, front crankshaft seal, cam retainer plate and bolts, timing/front cover gasket, head bolts (included in DOD-delete and full top-end kits), intake/exhaust/valve cover gaskets, fluids, and the correct valley-cover or DOD-delete hardware are the items most often left off a parts order. See the Parts People Forget section of the full parts guide.
Can I upgrade to a custom tune later?
Yes. If a downloadable compare file doesn't cover your exact combination, JR Jones Racing can upgrade you to a custom remote tune built for your setup — contact support or start on the Build Your Tune page.
