DOD and AFM are related.
The hardware still matters.
In normal GM conversations, DOD and AFM often describe the same general cylinder-deactivation family. The acronym alone does not identify the right tune file, controller match or delete parts.
DOD
Displacement on Demand is the earlier GM name commonly associated with cylinder deactivation.
AFM
Active Fuel Management is the later name widely used across GM LS- and LT-based applications.
ENGINE + CONTROLLER + HARDWARE + VVT
That combination—not the acronym by itself—determines the correct downloadable file, tuning service and mechanical path.
Why the calibration must match
Two different jobs.
Two different tune depths.
A mechanical delete changes which factory systems physically exist. A performance cam changes how the engine breathes and produces torque. Both require tuning, but a delete-only recalibration is not a complete cam tune.
DOD / VVT delete

This is primarily a system-matching job: the engine now has non-DOD lifters, fixed or limited VVT hardware, or both, so the ECM must stop commanding systems that are no longer mechanically active.
- DOD / AFM: Command full-time eight-cylinder operation and update supported cylinder-deactivation logic.
- VVT: Match the desired cam position and diagnostic strategy to the installed fixed gear, limiter or lockout.
- File match: Confirm engine, controller, operating system, transmission and exact hardware before changes are copied.
- Verification: Confirm the engine operates without the ECM requesting movement the installed hardware cannot make.
If the calibration still commands DOD or VVT after those systems are mechanically removed, the software and hardware disagree.
Cam swap
advanced tuning
A performance cam changes valve timing, overlap, vacuum, cylinder filling, airflow and calculated torque. Turning off DOD and VVT is only the beginning—the engine's operating model must be recalibrated around the new cam.
- Startup and idle: Desired idle speed, base running airflow, startup airflow, idle spark and stall recovery.
- Air model: MAF and virtual-VE behavior must match the cam's changed airflow and reversion.
- Fuel and torque: Fueling, delivered torque, throttle control and torque management must be validated under load.
- VVT and drivetrain: Cam-angle limits, converter behavior, shift strategy and other supported changes must work together.
- Datalog refinement: A real cam tune normally needs logs and revisions—not a generic delete-only file.
Base Tune is a startup and initial-drivability path. Full Custom is the complete datalogged process for a supported cammed combination.

What changes
inside the engine.
The tune must describe the hardware that is actually installed. Exact fitment depends on the engine, RPO, camshaft, controller and the specific DOD/AFM and VVT parts used.
What your DOD lifters looked like
A DOD/AFM lifter has an internal locking mechanism controlled through engine-oil pressure. When it sticks, collapses or unlocks at the wrong time, it can cause a lifter tick, dead-cylinder misfire, reduced valve movement and cam-lobe damage.
What LS7-style lifters are
LS7-style non-DOD lifters are commonly used in mechanical-delete builds because they do not contain the factory cylinder-deactivation mechanism. They must be installed with the correct camshaft, trays, valley hardware, gaskets and supporting parts.

Fixed cam gear / VVT-delete timing set
On a Gen IV VVT-delete combination, the variable cam phaser is replaced by a fixed timing arrangement matched to the camshaft. The ECM can no longer command the cam to advance or retard.

Phaser lockout and install kit
Many Gen V cam packages retain the factory-style phaser but install a zero-degree lockout or limiter inside it. The hardware controls how far the cam can move; the calibration must use the same allowed range and required position.

They are closely related GM cylinder-deactivation terms and are often used interchangeably. The exact engine generation, hardware and controller still determine the correct tune.
Can AFM be disabled without replacing the hardware?+
On a supported vehicle with healthy stock hardware, calibration can command the system off. The AFM/DOD lifters remain physically installed, so this does not repair or remove them.
Will a tune fix a bad DOD lifter or ticking engine?+
No. A failed lifter, damaged cam, oiling problem or other mechanical fault must be diagnosed and repaired before tuning.
Do I need a tune after a mechanical DOD delete?+
Yes. The calibration must stop commanding systems that no longer match the hardware and must reflect the installed lifters, camshaft and VVT configuration.
Why does a cam swap need more tuning?+
A performance cam changes startup airflow, idle vacuum, cylinder filling, MAF/VE behavior and calculated torque. Full Custom Remote Tuning uses datalogs and revisions to refine the new combination.
Can I write a JRJ downloadable file directly to my vehicle?+
